In T. H. White’s The Once and Future King, Merlin is a pacifist, teaching young Arthur his philosophy. At some point he mentions that they are both going to meet again, in hundreds years. I can imagine Merlin and Arthur being reborn from time to time, in different points of history, don’t bound by the destiny anymore yet still with the same anti-war philosophy; remembering their past lives thus not fitting among new generations, not tied to any place because they left their home far away, in the past.
